I became nearly inconsolable after processing the trio of “Off He Goes”, “Immortality”, and “Rearviewmirror”. No doubt he, like myself, went to bed thinking about our show that should’ve been. By the morning, though, any disappointment or jealousy had subsided. He regretted missing his favorite, “State of Love and Trust”, and some deeper Ten cuts. In words barely more eloquent than those, we spent the next hour, on and off, bemoaning that we had covered the wrong show - like two spoiled brats who had each found a shiny dime at his feet but grumbled that it wasn’t a quarter. I clicked on the setlist link, scanned down, and texted back: “Oh fuck…”

No apocalypse, no emergency, just a Pearl Jam setlist that he liked better than the one we got two nights earlier at Wrigley Field. As I shrugged off sleep to try and figure out what exactly that meant, the rest of his message came through: “Tonight’s set was so much better.” I stopped getting dressed and sank back into bed. That was the only word Editor-in-Chief Michael Roffman texted me late Monday night. This shouldn't be the case on an album that has 8 brilliant songs in a row (Hail Hail -> Lukin).Editor’s Note: This article originally ran in 2016.

To an extent where Around The Bend is a relief as an album closer. I love No Code, but Present Tense, Mankind and I'm Open just aren't up to scratch, especially in terms of momentum. It's kinda a fashionable album (their 4th) to have as your favourite, but just like Pearl Jam's 4th album (No Code) it has serious flaws. After that they basically abandoned playing Justice songs live for a decade (except One and Harvester). The massive changes on the Black Album were a direct reaction to the failings on Justice, that became very apparent after playing those songs live for 2 years. It was a low-point in their songwriting up to that point. And the hyper-scooped dry bassless production across the whole album is notorious. But the remaining 4 songs are cut-and-pasted-riff yawnfests. Yes it has two undeniable classics (One, Harvester), and a few good tracks (Blackened, Shortest, Dyers). Soundgarden - Matt Cameron is the drummer!!! (If you know of a band/artist that's not on this list, let us know, if you think there's one on here that doesn't belong - keep it to yourself).
